Hey FDA, glad you could finally make it!

jiffy pop

The same FDA that approved hormones in milk…

The same FDA that approved the drugs you see on TV, the ones whose side affects may include whatever litany of diseases, “and in some cases, death,”…

The same FDA that approved drugs like Vioxx that have now been recalled because they caused death in more than “some cases”…

In fact the same FDA that approved trans fats…

Has finally decided trans fats aren’t so safe after all. Specifically, they should not be considered safe in food. (Which makes me wonder – exactly what SHOULD they be considered safe in??) But I digress…

I told my family trans fats were bad 17 years ago. I knew they increased bad prostaglandins, among a host of other problems.

At the time trans fats were called ‘partially hydrogenated oils.’

I wondered why Canada and none of the countries I’d visited in Europe had foods with partially hydrogenated oils in them. Why was the USA the only country where they were sold? Hmmm, makes you think eh?

Of course my family listened and changed their behavior, right?

Ha. Fat chance. My family made fun of me. They teased me. They called them pho’s. As in, “Hey, want some chips, Rob? Oh wait, you better watch out for the pho’s.”

Hardy har. I just had to smile and endure. But eventually I wore them down (or maybe just wore on them) until they relented. Whichever, one-by-one, my family finally agreed trans fats aren’t healthy.

And 17 years later, the FDA agrees too.

Hey FDA…welcome to the family!
